Additional Description

Below you will find additional information on the different aspects of the area you will be staying in. This should help give you a good idea of where you will be heading and help you prepare for your stay.

Living in Rio de Janeiro

Rio is a diverse, lively city so it’s a good idea to prepare yourself and find out as much as possible about where you are heading before you leave, so read on.

With white sandy beaches in one direction, lush green mountains in another, and the famous Christ Redeemer statue perched above it all, Rio de Janeiro is one of the most spectacular cities in the world. And that’s just the view! Discover why Rio is the "Cidade Maravilhosa" as you meet friendly locals, kick back in the relaxed atmosphere, and samba in the sultry tropical air. "Cariocas" (Rio natives) are famous for their hospitality, openness, and warmth. You won’t have any trouble meeting them - just head to the beach or look in a nightclub where you’ll find them dancing the night away!

Despite a hefty (and well-deserved) reputation for wild nightlife, endless parties, and Carnival carousing, there is more to Rio than the party scene. Headquarters to some of Brazil’s largest companies, Rio de Janeiro is a hub of national and international business and economy. This cosmopolitan city also offers a wide variety of historic and cultural sites, museums, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. With beautiful beaches, a friendly populace, and an array of cultural offerings, Rio provides an unforgettable backdrop for learning Portuguese in Brazil.

Nature
Enjoy amazing walks and fantastic scenery in the Tijuca National Park, the world’s second largest natural parkland area within a city. Discover new perspectives of the city from up at o morro, Pedra da Gávea (842 meters); enjoy and relax in nature, and if you dare, hang glide (ala delta) down to the city while enjoying a unique view as you soar from above. Rio is one of the favorite places for climbers because of the spectacular views while climbing the mountain rock faces. And if you have lots of energy, discover the city’s most famous hill, the Sugar Loaf Mountain, one of the most spectacular and most historic sites in Rio de Janeiro. Or for a more relaxed plan, you can stroll through the botanical gardens and explore its every corner, like the orchid garden.

Fun
Enjoy the beaches and life on the streets of Rio. Meander around or go by bike or go jogging around the Lagoa (lake) in the city. Discover Santa Teresa’s bohemian neighborhood and the most exclusive shops in Leblon and Ipanema. Lose yourself by exploring all of the city beaches. Go up to Sugar Loaf Mountain on its historic cable car and discover views from every corner of the city. There will never be enough days to explore and discover everything Rio has to offer. At night, dance and have fun, find the best places in the city where you can enjoy all styles of music, and especially the samba!

Music & Samba
Proof that Rio de Janeiro is historically linked to music is found with the famous nickname "Cidade Maravilhosa". The name comes from a 1930's song, and shows how Rio de Janeiro has always been central to the urban music of Brazil. Of course, you’ll know that Rio was also greatly popularized with the song "A Girl from Ipanema". Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes in the 1960's, the song has been performed many times over the years by musicians such as Stan Getz, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. The song is the standard of the Bossa Nova, a musical style born in Rio de Janeiro. Music is alive everywhere, and you feel it continually around the city on every corner, where you can enjoy an energetic roda de samba.

Art & Architecture
Stroll through the city’s old quarter and come across its colonial architecture. The streets are populated with houses in a multitude of colors, which is hard to find in any other city. Visit the History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. Stroll through Cinelandia, Praça XV and arrive at the Paço Imperial.

Gastronomy
The variety of food and dishes surprises many visitors to Brazil. Besides the popular national dish Feijoada, numerous varieties of dishes can be savored every day. "Sucos" (juice of many fruits) deserves a special mention because many of the fruits will be exotically unknown to you and some are only found in Brazil.

Multiversity
Brazil is a country where racial differences and the color of the skin really lose their importance. Infinite colors and customs live together in Rio de Janeiro, making everyone feel comfortable.

Outside of Rio
Around the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, you can find amazing places like Paraty, Angra dos Reis, Barra da Tijuca, Petropolis, Ilha Grande and many more. Despite not being as well known as the sites and sounds found within the city, they are also unforgettable places.

Activities

There are lots of regular activities for you to get involved with at the Language Center. They like to think they are 'one big family', and all of the activities and excursions they offer allow their students to get to know each other.
Most of our activities are free and the only charge is for transport and/or food. It is also a perfect opportunity for students to practice all the Portuguese they've learned with the other students.
Some of the activities are:

Beach Volleyball: A free game of volleyball on the world-famous Ipanema beach. Join other students, get some exercise and practice some Portuguese.

Brazilian Cinema: Every Tuesday we show a Brazilian movie with Portuguese subtitles at the school (we have a projector and a sound system). Great for deepening your understanding of Brazilian culture and improving your Portuguese. Popcorn provided!

Favela Tour: A visit to Favela Santa Marta. The one Michael Jackson made famous filming his music video "They don't really care about us". The favela is also famous for the amazing colorful houses at the top of the hill (a great photo opportunity).

Samba Class: Learn Brazil's most famous dance with Bruno, our great professional Samba teacher from Lapa. We guarantee you Bruno will get your hips moving and shaking.

City Tour: Every alternating Friday come and explore Rio de Janeiro with many other students from the school. Excursions include going to Urca, the city centre, Christ the Redeemer, biking riding around the lagoon, a picnic in Parque Lage, and other interesting places in Rio de Janeiro.
