Apart from its natural jungle-like beauty, Puerto Viejo is known for its great surf with high and constant waves, which attract surfers from all over the world. Backpackers just visiting the Costa Rican Caribbean coast are seen a lot here, too. The advantage of this side of Costa Rica is that there are no high rise hotels or ‘all-inclusives’ around here - Puerto Viejo is still very unspoiled.
Just outside the village you are surrounded by jungle with all its inhabitants including sloths, monkeys, anteaters, armadillos, snakes, skunks and lots of colorful birds, for example toucans and parrots. You will encounter all these animals easily during a walk or bike ride just outside town. The town has a scale of restaurants from cheap Costa Rican ‘soda’s’ to excellent international restaurants where you can enjoy all kinds of cuisines at all price ranges. There are two discos at the beach, weekly jam sessions and a few bands that play regularly for free at the restaurants and bars. It's nightlife entertainment at its best as you can choose between salsa, reggae, jazz, reggaeton, calypso - we have it all here in Puerto Viejo!
