Join the Turtle Conservation project and work alongside a local team to help protect the endangered sea turtles of Indonesia.
The Turtle Conservation project is located on the charming island of Nusa Penida, which is a 45-minute speedboat ride from mainland Bali. The project is in its early stages and you will work alongside a local team and help protect the endangered sea turtles of Indonesia. You will contribute to conserve the turtles by working at our turtle conservation center. Depending on the time of the year since turtles do not nest all year round, you may be identifying turtle species, collecting eggs, monitoring nests or seeing hatchlings get safely to sea.

You must be prepared for a more basic standard of living on the island, with fewer shops and attractions available (bearing in mind the beach is practically at your doorstep)!

Participants at the Turtle Conservation project must participate in the project for a minimum of two weeks and during school holidays participants will work on the conservation site instead of teaching English.

Bali - Turtle Project

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Sunday
Welcome the new arrivals. You will have your lunch and receive a short introduction on the beach to get familiarized yourself to this new exciting setting. After that you will get to know more about Nusa Penida, particularly, about the supermarket, ATM etc.

Monday
After having breakfast, you will see a presentation about the Turtle Conservation project and also receive a project briefing which will help you to understand the do’s and don’ts at the project. After that, you will start to engage in the typical activities you are supposed to do throughout the week such as feeding the turtles, cleaning the tanks, catching live food for turtles and also cleaning the beach. In the evening, you will then see a documentary about turtles which will help you to widen your knowledge about these amazing creatures.

Tuesday - Thursday
After breakfast you will start cleaning the tanks, feeding the turtles and collecting seaweed and live food for turtles. In addition, you will also create turtle toys, clean the beach and provide medicine for injured turtles if present.

On either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday you will visit an amazing location called the Crystal Bay which has a breathtaking view. Your local coordinators will decide the day. Thursday night will also be a special one because we enjoy a welcome and farewell dinner by a bonfire at the beach. This is a great opportunity to get to know the newcomers better and say goodbye to those who are leaving.

Friday
On Friday, after breakfast, you will feed the turtles and get an amazing opportunity to release turtles to the sea, but please note that this opportunity is only if you are leaving the program this week. If you continue another week at the project, you will engage in the regular activities at the turtle conservation center. For those who are leaving the program, there is also a feedback session regarding the project. After lunch, all volunteers take part in activities such as feeding the turtles, cleaning tanks and measuring the turtles' growth.

The teaching plan at the local school will be confirmed every Friday. Volunteers work around 5 hours a day.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances. During school breaks participants will work on the conservation site instead of teaching English.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free.

Introduction Week

This program includes an Introduction Week which is packed full of exciting adventures, cultural excursions and interactions. Indonesia is one of most interesting countries in the world for cultural learning and experiences. Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handicrafts and performing arts.

During the Introduction Week you will be participating in various activities and will get acquainted with the Balinese culture, study the Balinese language and explore Ubud including the famous Monkey Street as well as the beautiful surrounding areas. During this week you will experience a traditional Balinese show and challenge your artistic and creative side through traditional Batik Painting and also try out your skills as a cook with a traditional Balinese cooking class. Finally, you will make a traditional flower offering and offer your creation at one of the most impressive Balinese temples: The Holy Tirta Empul Temple. We take a short spiritual tour around this famous temple, bathe in holy waters and pray for good luck. Evenings during the introduction week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Accommodation

You will stay at the volunteer houses in the Banjar Nyuh village, located on the island and about 5 minutes from the harbour. Village life is quintessentially local and you will get a good chance to see typical Balinese life, where you will get the chance to interact with local people and practice your new-found language skills. You must be prepared for a more basic standard of living on the island, with fewer shops and attractions available (bearing in mind the beach is practically at your doorstep)!

We provide all basic facilities at the volunteer house which includes shared bathrooms with a cold water shower and western toilets. You can expect to share a room with one to seven other volunteers of the same gender. There is WiFi available at the volunteer accommodation, however the connection is unreliable so we recommend purchasing a SIM card with data for an unlocked mobile during your program orientation in Ubud.
All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.

Local transport

The project is located on the island of Nusa Penida which is a 45-minute speedboat ride from mainland Bali.

Arrival Information
We only receive participants on the Sunday before a participant's program begins. The pick-up time from Denpasar Airport is between 06:00 and 20:00. After passing through customs, make sure you stay on the same floor and follow the way to the arrival gate. Our representative will be waiting for you in front of this gate with your name board and bring you to our center.

If you're traveling to Denpasar Bali overland, we can arrange a pick-up at the following meeting points:
- Bintang Supermarket in Ubud at 14:00 on Sundays (Address: Jl. Raya Sanggingan No.45 Ubud, Bali 80515, Indonesia)
- Make your own way to Denpasar Airport at 14:00 on the Sunday before your program starts. Meeting point is at the international arrivals flight information center.

We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your stay in Indonesia for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with the staff/other participants/international calls. A SIM card is especially useful if you are traveling to the project on your own.

Early Arrivals
If you arrive much earlier than the pick-up window, you can choose to:

Request extra accommodation and pick-up from us at an additional cost
OR
Accommodate yourself until you can meet your coordinator at a meeting point.

Late Arrivals
We strongly discourage arriving after your pick-up window, as it may take longer for you to settle into your program. But if unavoidable, you must either:

Make your own way to us
OR
Request a special pick-up at an extra cost.

*** REMEMBER: In any case, let us know your plans. You must also inform us of any flight changes or emergencies as soon as possible. ***

Departure Information
Please be aware that you have to check out on the Saturday morning after the program. We do not offer airport drops on completion of the program due to the many different personal plans and return flight times and so participants need to make their own way to the airport. Our coordinator can help you with the different transportation options, but you will have to cover the cost.

Please make sure you are prepared to pay the country tax of 150,000 IDR when leaving Indonesia. This departure tax applies to everyone leaving the country.

Getting to the Project
It takes 5 mins to walk to the project from your accommodation.

Meals

A variety of vegetarian food and fruit is served in 'food boxes' due to safety and health reasons (3 meals a day on weekdays, breakfast on Saturdays, and breakfast and dinner on Sundays).

Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Please be aware

ATM’s
There are many ATM's in the center of Nusa Penida which is 20 minutes by car from the house. The ATM accepts ONLY Master Card. It does NOT accept VISA.

Internet
We have Wi-Fi at the volunteer house (however, the signal strength varies and is not very fast).

Local SIM Card
It is possible to buy these at the local shop. They cost about 20,000 IDR.
