Better education for a brighter future' is the slogan this project goes by. Our focus is on providing education to children and adults from the local, historically disadvantaged communities. We believe that quality, holistic education is vital for transformation to take place.
Help transform a child’s life is a Public Benefit Organisation based in Hout Bay, Cape Town. The program was founded on the belief that sponsoring school fees alone is not enough to ensure a child’s success. A more holistic approach is needed, one that considers social, emotional, cultural and physical needs.

Our Education Support Programme was developed to address these needs. We are successfully integrating these children into a more challenging and diverse school environment, while providing their families with much needed guidance and a network of support.
Our beneficiaries come from low-income, historically disadvantaged communities of Hout Bay including Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg. The majority of people living in these communities face poverty and hardship every day, and despite the change in democracy, good schooling and housing are out of reach for most of them.

As part of our Education Support Programme, we provide:
- Financial support to attend a good school
- Dedicated mentor who will work closely with school, learner and family
- Cultural enrichment holiday programme
- Support in maths and literacy
- Access to subsidised medical and dental care
- Safe transport to and from school, aftercare and extra murals
- Parenting workshops for the parents whose children on in our programme

The success of our parent workshops led to the development of the Community Workshops Programme. The workshops aim to inform and educate about issues such as parenting, homework assistance, physical and dental health, CV writing and budget skills. The Workshops Programme shares vital life-changing information and skills, in collaboration with other non-profits and organisations working within the areas of education, health-care and self-development, to instil self-confidence, afford opportunities and support community members in uplifting themselves.

Is There a Potential Risk?

The work itself is not dangerous. Generally, HIV/AIDS is extremely prevalent in South Africa, so it is your personal responsibility to take care with regards to health and safety, as well as sexual relationships.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
