Help fighting food waste in Porto by assisting local teams in collecting food excess from local restaurants, shops and cafés and organizing and re-distributing it among the people in need!
Did you know that every day, over 3000 people in Portugal are fed by a social institution that collects food in good condition from local restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets that would otherwise be wasted and thrown into the trash? In this program, you will have the opportunity to really fight food waste in the city of Porto!

Volunteers will support a network of centers which recover leftover food in good condition from local restaurants, supermarkets, and cafés and re-distribute it among families, elderly and homeless people in need.

The shifts will be held in different centers across Porto, and alongside other local and international volunteers, you will be involved with different tasks such as collecting the food, assisting with packaging it, cleaning used containers, assisting with sorting and storage of any food left for the next day, distributing it to the families and cleaning up at the end of your shift!
Itinerary

Porto - Food Rescue

What happens on your first day?

In the morning, the local staff lead an interactive session (at the volunteer accommodation) that includes some ice-breaker activities and a presentation that covers a lot of useful information including: an introduction to Portugal and it's culture, the volunteer experience (setting expectations), an overview of our programs, practical information for getting around the city and beyond, and safety guidelines. In the afternoon, the volunteers are escorted into the city center for a special tour. They are also able to buy bus tickets, local sim cards and exchange money if necessary, all with a local staff member for support.

Itinerary

After the initial orientation, you will join the afternoon or evening shift at your placement and will work for approximately 3 to 5 hours per day. Please note that the starting times and daily workload depend on the center that you are participating in.

A typical daily schedule for an evening shift will look as follows:

10:00 Explore the city and learn Portuguese during your free time.

13:00 Have lunch at the accommodation or stay out in the city.

18:00 Travel to your project by public transportation and join the local staff to volunteer at one of the food rescue centers.

21:00 Dinner with other international volunteers and other travelers.

Please note that the actual schedule can change according to the shifts volunteers participate in. Usually shifts last from 18:30 to 20:30 pm, but at times, they can last until midnight.
