As a marine Conservation volunteer in Split, you will have the unique opportunity to provide support to underwater clean-up efforts, helping to reduce sea pollution and conserve marine life!
All volunteers complete internationally recognized SSI (Scuba Schools International) diving certifications. The diving certification you complete will depend on your current diving experience and the length of your stay. The courses range from Suba Diver through to Open Water Diver, and specialties such as Marine Ecology and Fish Identification. The project works with a local diving school, therefore you are always supervised by an experienced dive instructor.

All volunteer efforts on the project work towards the vision of healthier oceans, thriving ecosystems and a clean coastline - all driven by an aware and inspired community. As part of this, your tasks as a volunteer can include collecting trash from the sea, logging information on items collected, learning more about the marine ecosystem and how to protect it, and observing and identifying fish.

The program is open to beginners without any diving experience; however, volunteers will have to gain dive certification before engaging in any type of underwater conservation activities. The Program Fee covers the cost of the required online and in-person training, full scuba equipment, and volunteer supervision from an experienced dive instructor.
Itinerary

Split - Marine Conservation

What happens on your first day?

In the morning, you get to meet some of the local staff in an interactive session (at the volunteer accommodation) that includes some ice-breaker activities and a presentation that covers a lot of useful information including: an introduction to Croatia and it's culture, the volunteer experience (setting expectations), practical information for getting around the city and beyond, and safety guidelines.
In the afternoon, the new volunteers will be taken on a special tour of the city centre. You will also able to buy bus tickets, local sim cards and exchange money if necessary, all with a local staff member for support.

Itinerary

After the initial orientation in Split, you will spend the rest of your volunteering time in Omis with other volunteers, as this is where the marine conservation work takes place.

A typical weekday will look like this:

08:00 - 09:00 Breakfast at the volunteer house
09:00 - 09:30 Take the bus from the accommodation to the diving school
10:00 - 12:30 First dive of the day. You will start by learning the fundamentals and after a couple of days you will start diving in the Adriatic Sea.
13:00 - 14:00 Take a break for lunch
14:00 - 16:00 Second dive of the day.
16:00 - 16:30 Travel back to Split
17:00 - 17:30 Relaxing & Travel time. Usually, the evenings are free to travel around the city, learn Croatian or relax.
19:30 - 21:00 Dinner at the volunteer accommodation along with the other volunteers.

Please note this schedule can vary depending on the dive course you are taking, the weather conditions and your progress.

Which diving tracks are available to me during the volunteer period?

If you are a diving beginner, you will start with the fundamentals and safety procedures. Once you get more autonomous - usually during the second week - you can start helping to collect trash. If you already have some experience, you will get to dive right away and contribute to our mission even quicker. You can start the program at any experience level and obtain the next level of certification accordingly!

Mandatory requirements

You need to complete the Dive Medical Questionnaire before departure.
