Your student life in California at University of California, Los Angeles

As a student at UCLA you will undoubtedly have the time of your life. Investing in an education from UCLA, is an investment in yourself and your career, and it is an experience of a lifetime. You will be studying at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains. The campus of UCLA is located only 5 miles from the ocean and is bordered by the famous Sunset Boulevard to the north.

In the weekends you'll have Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara within reach. And if you're into national parks we recommend that you visit the Grand Canyon and Yosemite to name a few.

The UCLA campus is so beautiful and majestic that it attracts hundreds of weekly visitors. Two iconic buildings, Royce Hall and Powell Library, are two of UCLA’s original structures. This beautiful architecture, along with the daily sunlight, make walking to class a pleasant routine. Apart from its apparent beauty, you should also note that UCLA is a very safe campus. The university has its own 24-hour police department to ensure student safety, as well as Community Service Officers that are available to walk you home late at night. However, UCLA students are quite active, so you will rarely walk outside without seeing many people around. In this sense, the university never sleeps. UCLA Extension is also located in the Westwood Village area, so it quite integrated into the general student and campus community.

About Certificates at at UCLA

Through UCLA Extension, students can earn certificates in a range of specialties, including, but not limited to:

  • Journalism
  • Business Administration
  • Marketing
  • Music Production
  • Screenwriting
  • Cinematography
  • Film Scoring
  • Architecture and Interior Design
  • Design and Communication Arts
  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • International Trade and Commerce
  • Music Production
  • Journalism
  • Cinematography
  • Film Scoring
  • Sustainability

Many of these certificate programs include an internship, which offers the perfect combination between a proper academic background and valuable work experience. Certificates usually consist of 9-12 courses offered over a period of 9-12 months (3-4 quarters). As an international student you study side-by-side with American professionals and students. Many certificate students already have a university degree and will often also have some work experience.

Most programs include core/required courses + elective courses. This gives you a great foundation, whilst simultaneously allowing you to choose courses that meet your needs and interests. Many Certificate students already have an undergraduate degree and work during the day. Therefore, the courses are mainly evening courses. Some sessions are taught during the weekend.

Within the College of Letters and Science, students can enroll in a variety of courses in the humanities, social sciences, and hard sciences, as long as they meet the pre-requisites for the specific courses. Please note that courses in Economics and Psychology are limited, as they are already in high demand for existing students.

A semester or two at UCLA

If you do not wish to complete a full certificate program, you also have the option to study abroad for one or two semesters. As a study abroad student, you can take courses from either UCLA Extension, the UCLA College of Letters and Science, or both. In doing so, you may be able to transfer the completed credits to your home university with prior permission. UCLA courses are primarily daytime courses, taken alongside American UCLA students (age range: 18-22).

About summer school at UCLA

UCLA offers two sessions of summer courses annually. The first session (Session A) runs from late June for six, eight or ten weeks and the second (Session C) runs from the beginning of August, for another six weeks. Students may enroll in either or both sessions. Students can choose from more than 1,000 courses in the arts, economics, engineering, film and TV, political science and more. Visiting international students will have access to over 1,000 UCLA courses as well as all campus resources, including libraries, recreational facilities, student housing and more.

Housing near University of California, Los Angeles

Though UCLA has campus dormitories, it is more common for international students to live off-campus. Similarly, most local students prefer the independence of living off-campus after their first one or two years. The surrounding Westwood neighborhoods have many private apartment rentals and cooperative housing options for you to choose from. You will see that student renters dominate this entire area, so the atmosphere is quite young and fun. The UCLA Community Housing Office (CHO) is a great resource. We experience that a lot of students stress about finding accommodation near UCLA, but it is not as hard and difficult as you think. All of our students have previously found great student accommodation near UCLA.

Life on UCLA campus

UCLA offers excellent leisure, dining, and academic facilities to its students. As a UCLA student, you can exercise at the John Wooden Center, sunbathe at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, study in all campus libraries, hang out in Ackerman Student Union, purchase supplies from the Associated Students Store, and enjoy all campus restaurants.

Additionally, the UCLA campus is also the home of the Pauley Pavilion, a brand-new basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics arena. During the university’s athletic events, you will always find Pauley Pavilion filled with cheering students and fans. UCLA students are very supportive of their athletic teams, which is an important part of the American college experience. In fact, the UCLA football team plays every home game at the famous Rose Bowl arena. With a maximum occupancy of 90,000, the stadium is full during every season game.
