Student Life at the University of California, Los AngelesUCLA sits on a huge campus at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains. The campus is located only 5 miles from the ocean and is bordered by the famous Sunset Boulevard to the north.
The UCLA campus is so beautiful and majestic that it attracts hundreds of weekly visitors, especially during the spring and summer months. Two iconic buildings, Royce Hall and Powell Library, are two of UCLA’s original structures. This beautiful architecture, along with the daily sunlight, make walking to class a pleasant routine. Apart from its apparent beauty, you should also note that UCLA is a very safe campus. The university has its own 24-hour police department to ensure student safety, as well as Community Service Officers that are available to walk you home late at night. However, UCLA students are quite active, so you will rarely walk outside without seeing many people around. In this sense, the university never sleeps. UCLA Extension is also located in the Westwood Village area, so it quite integrated into the general student and campus community.
UCLA offers excellent leisure, dining, and academic facilities to its students. As a UCLA student, you can exercise at the John Wooden Center, sunbathe at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, study in all campus libraries, hang out in Ackerman Student Union, purchase supplies from the Associated Students Store, and enjoy all campus restaurants. UCLA Extension Certificate Students must obtain a student BruinCard identification upon arrival in order to access some of these facilities. Additionally, the UCLA campus is also the home of the Pauley Pavilion, a brand-new basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics arena. During the university’s athletic events, you will always find Pauley Pavilion filled with cheering students and fans. UCLA students are very supportive of their athletic teams, which is an important part of the American college experience. In fact, the UCLA football team plays every home game at the famous Rose Bowl arena. With a maximum occupancy of 90,000, the stadium is full during every season game.
Though UCLA has campus dormitories, it is more common for international students to live off-campus. Similarly, most local students prefer the independence of living off-campus after their first one or two years. The surrounding Westwood neighborhoods have many private apartment rentals and cooperative housing options for you to choose from. You will see that student renters dominate this entire area, so the atmosphere is quite young and fun. The UCLA Community Housing Office (CHO) is a great resource.
