sunset over the horizon in rovinj in the istria region, croatia

Istria region Croatia

It's time to cross the borders to Croatia! The region Istria is the heart-shaped 3600 km2 peninsula in the country's northwest corner, just below western Slovenia. The region attracts food and culture enthusiasts from all over the world, and this is especially the case in Istria’s hilltop villages, rural hotels, and farmhouse restaurants. The indented coastline of Istria is enormously popular among sun-seekers. Though a vast amount of hotel complexes line much of the Istria coast, the rocky beaches aren't Croatia’s best. However, the facilities are wide-ranging, the sea is clean and secluded spots are still plentiful. When in Istria you have to try the daily caught fresh raw fish specialties, the '"Meditternian Sashimi" or any other fresh...

It's once again time to say hi to Croatia. While Zagreb is the most populous city in the country and attracts the most visitors with its wealth of historic sights, cultural landmarks, and majestic medieval old town, it is well worth venturing further afield, as Central Croatia has much more to offer. Attracting substantially fewer visitors than Zagreb are the regions smaller picturesque old towns like Sisak, as well as crumbling fortresses and age-old churches. Sisak is not only a cozy town, but it's also an attractive musical centre as evidenced by one of the best Jazz clubs in this part of Europe where the most important jazz, blues and swing musicians perform. Consequently, the Central Croatia region offer a more authentic look at loca...

This road trip takes you through a dimensional Balkan. From rich to poor. From beaten tracks to wild unconquered places. From mountains to sea, yet back out there in the wild again. It takes you through three countries so close yet so different. Slovenia. Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This road trip leads you to the most astonishing parts of Western Balkan.

Head down a sideroad crawling into a deep valley through an old orchard with the sweetest fruits you can imagine. Go on a trek into the unknown. Drive south and you have the big blue on your right. Take a dive. Board a boat headed to the islands in the horizon. Treat yourself a sundowner, while the freshest fish is grilled to perfection. That's freedom at its finest.

Drive east through villages of the past, with a slow tomorrow. On the side of the road is a Mosque torn by the war. Hang out at a town-square with stories swirling about the long-gone. Have a drink with the weather-beaten truck drivers, heading somewhere beyond. Stop for the night with a view over the mountain tops, under an old oak tree, or right at the sea.

This is a perfected road trip for you who's been dreaming of exploring the western parts of Balkan. From the beautiful Slovenian mountains to the Croatian shoreline and onwards to the thrilling Bosnia-Herzegovina.
