Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries on the sub-continent, Zimbabwe boasts spectacular features, including ancient ruins from an unknown past, one of the largest rivers in Africa, an abundance of game and wildlife reserves, an efficient tourism infrastructure and a vibrant, friendly local population. Our tour is primarily a camping safari with limited comforts but unlimited adventure. Flexibility and an open-mind are essential.

ZIMBABWE 16 DAY CAMPING

DAY 1: JHB - ZIMBABWE

Our journey begins on departure from the GREENFIRE LODGE JOHANNESBURG at 06h30. We cover some distance today, first passing Pretoria, then through the bushveld of Limpopo province and over the Soutpansberg Mountain range, before crossing the Limpopo River, and the border into Zimbabwe, at Beit Bridge. Tonight we stay at The Lion and Elephant Motel on the banks of the Bubye River, our first taste of friendly Zimbabwean hospitality. DAY 2-3: GREAT ZIMBABWE - SAVE VALLEY CONSERVANCY

Our first stop this morning will be at Great Zimbabwe, modern Zimbabwe's namesake and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A local guide will take us on a tour of these magnificent historical structures and explain their origins, and the controversy fostered by a previous generation of historians. Thereafter, we continue east to the Save Valley Conservancy, one of the largest private game reserves in Africa, offering some of the finest game viewing opportunities in Zimbabwe. We will spend two nights here in our private rustic bush camp, and will explore the area both on foot and in an open vehicle. DAY 4: EASTERN HIGHLANDS

Leaving the Lowveld, we travel through Mutare and into the Eastern Highlands, a mountain range that extends for about 300 kilometres and creates a natural border to Mozambique. This is an area of spectacular scenery, forests, mountains and waterfalls. This afternoon we arrive at our camp for the night, and after setting up, we conduct a short hike in the surrounding mountains. DAY 5: CHINHOYI

An early start today, we travel westward along the winding descent into the capital city, Harare, where we enjoy a short stop for lunch (own expense). Leaving Harare, we continue to our overnight stop near Chinhoyi, where we spend the remainder of the day enjoying a walk in the wilderness surrounding our camp. DAY 6: KARIBA

A short drive today before we descend into the Zambezi Valley on a road that follows ancestral elephant paths. Then it's on to Lake Kariba, the third largest man-made lake in the world. After setting up camp, we enjoy an afternoon boat cruise on the lake. DAY 7: ZAMBIA

After exploring the town of Kariba in the morning, we cross the border over the dam wall to enter Zambia. Our next stop is Gwabi River Lodge, at the confluence of the Kafue and mighty Zambezi rivers. It is from here that we will embark on a two day canoe trip on the Zambezi River. The afternoon is spent preparing for the upcoming canoe trip as we pack all the essentials we will need. We camp the night. DAY 8- 10: ZAMBEZI CANOE TRIP

A mighty river, literally boiling with hippos and crocodiles, and luring every imaginable animal to drink from its sandy banks, the Zambezi has drawn explorers, adventurers and naturalists for centuries. Paddling down the river, watching animals from the water, allows us to enjoy the same experience as these intrepid pioneers. We start our canoeing adventure at Gwabi River Lodge, paddling first down the Kafue River, while the guides instruct those new to canoes. We then join the Zambezi, and spend the next two days paddling easily with the current, game viewing and bird watching as we go. We pass Mana Pools, one of Zimbabwe's famous National Parks, and we camp wild on islands each night. The trip ends where the Chongwe River joins the Zambezi. A motor boat returns us to Gwabi River Lodge, where we camp the night and enjoy a welcome restaurant meal (own expense). DAY 11 -12 VICTORIA FALLS

We start early this morning and travel through Zambia via Livingstone, crossing the original steel railway bridge to Zimbabwe, with a spectacular view of Victoria Falls, in the afternoon. The falls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are regarded as the biggest in the world if both breadth and height are considered. Your entry fee to the falls is included in the tour price, and you are free to spend as much time as you like viewing the falls and exploring the surrounding rain forest. Various other attractions can be visited here, including the tribal village and curio market. Victoria Falls is also home to a multitude of adventure activities, such as an aircraft flip over the falls, a boat trip on the Zambezi River, white water rafting or bungee jumping, but allowance must be made for the extra expense of these optional activities - these are just a few suggestions among a plethora of options. We spend two nights here, allowing you some time to explore the town and all it has to offer, with the freedom to choose the sights and activities that interest you. One dinner and one lunch will be eaten at local restaurants (own expense). On the last night we celebrate at a local nightspot and thrill to the vibe of Africa's adventure playground. DAY 13: HWANGE

We enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the lodge before we leave Victoria Falls behind us and make our way back to the bush. We travel the short distance to the renowned Hwange National Park, well known as one of Africa's foremost wildlife areas, and our base for the night. After an afternoon open vehicle game drive, we return to the campsite to have dinner, before going out on a night drive, looking for the nocturnal species we can't easily see in daylight. We return to spend the night at our camp in the park. DAY 14: BULAWAYO - MATOBO

This morning we leave for Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city, and the capital of Matabeleland Province. Bulawayo was founded in 1840 by the Ndebele King, Mzilikazi, who was a lieutenant of King Shaka Zulu, but who escaped Zululand following a dispute with Shaka to found his own kingdom in Matabeleland. We don't stop here for long, but continue to our camp nestled amongst the precarious boulders of Matobo. This afternoon we are collected at our camp by a local expert guide, and taken in open vehicles to Matobo National Park, where we will track rhino on foot. The thrill of getting close to wild rhinos in the bush is an experience that will not be soon forgotten. DAY 15: LIMPOPO

Continuing south today, we cross the border into Botswana and to our camp situated on a private game reserve within the Limpopo valley. On arrival in the afternoon, there will be time for a short walk along the bank of the Limpopo River. DAY 16: JOHANNESBURG

This morning, after crossing the border into South Africa, we follow a scenic route through the Waterberg, before entering the bustle of Africa's economic heart, Johannesburg. The tour ends on arrival in the late afternoon at the GREENFIRE LODGE JOHANNESBURG.
