I'm Julie and I study in Canada

"Canadians are some of the most polite people in the world."

"I had absolutely no idea about what I wanted to study. I had not found anything in Norway that interested me. I was (and I still am) dating a Canadian, so I started looking into schools in Canada through KILROY. The global and international studies available at Carleton University really caught my interest, but I was still not 100% sure. I contacted KILROY and they were super helpful in the application process. I thought that even if I was accepted, I could still choose to decline if it didn’t feel right."

How KILROY helped me

"Getting help from KILROY with the application was crucial to me, because it can be very confusing on your own. Thankfully I got in! Now I’m finishing my second year, and I love it. The best thing about studying abroad I think is getting a different perspective on the world. Cultural encounters are so important and valuable. Canadians in general are also some of the most polite and welcoming people!! I was worried my English wasn’t good enough and that it would be challenging to do school in a different language. But it’s not that hard, and there are many international students and Carleton offer a lot of student services to those who need help."

My student accommodation

"The campus is huge. First year I stayed on campus, which was a good way to get to know people and it also meant a short way to classes. I would recommend staying on campus first year, but I had two gap years so I was three years older than most students which made a difference for me. I guess I just felt more mature because for most of them it’s their first year away from home."

Student life in Ottawa

"So I enjoy living off-campus a lot more, because I get to see more of the city. I really like Ottawa!! There are many cool events throughout the year, like Winterlude, skating on the canal, brew fest and coffee fest. Its such a unique city. My favorite thing about Ottawa is that its big but it feels small, and it has a lot of green spaces so it doesn’t feel like a city. The area around Carleton is really nice. I love walking through the arboretum, the experimental farm and along the canal."

"If you’re thinking about going to Ottawa and Carleton, prepare for freezing cold. Winters are crazy. It can get down to -40 some days. The good thing about Carleton though, is that there are underground tunnels between all buildings so you don’t need to go outside to go from class to class!"
