Are you ready for an adventure through the West Coast of Portugal? Start out in Lisbon and continue northwards along the beautiful portuguese coast line and enjoy some nice stops in cozy beach towns.

This road trip is a great way to enjoy Portugal. Simple as that. You start out by enjoying the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, where you have 3 nights included in the centrally located Selina Hostel surrounded by plenty of cool and hip bars and restaurants. It's a great way to kickstart your adventure, and you can enjoy all the perks the beautiful city offers for a few days before embarking on your road trip.

Stroll along the hilly streets. Stop for cup of coffee. Catch one of the famous Fado concerts or grab a cocktail in one of the many, many bars at night time.

When you're ready to move on, go to Povoa de Santa Iria in the north of Lisbon, where you pick up your rental camper. This will be your home for the coming 7 days, and will provide you with both transportation and shelter for the night. Freedom at it's finest!

First stop after Lisbon is Peniche with it's beach vibes. Get ready for the classic Portuguese beach and surf atmosphere which you will quickly find out dominates the picture here. From Peniche you continue along the monastery heritage route, where a few different small towns is on the agenda.

The monastery heritage route ends in Coimbra well-known for it's many cultural elements including Portugal's oldest university. You end your road trip in beautiful Oporto in the north, where we recommend that you spend a few days. The local wine should be tried.

You can either pay the one way rental fee (which is included) and return your camper here, og go back to Lisbon if you want to save some bucks. If you have even more days on your hands, you can also choose to continue your road trip in the countryside north of Porto, it's really beautiful and cozy.

What is road trippin’ the KILROY Way?

Well, we always encourage our travelers to be curious. To open up, and to embrace the unexpected. Stop where you can, go down the narrow side street and don’t get stuck in the camper. Don’t just drive for the sake of driving. Approach new people. Approach new ways of doing things. Explore and be open to changes – that’s where the magic happens.

Please note that if you expect sea temperatures to reach those of the Mediterranean, you will be disappointed. It can get quite cold in the Atlantic Ocean and temperatures rarely exceed 20 degrees.

Here you'll get an overview of your road trip in Portugal. Remember that the route is only a suggestion, and you can design your road trip as you wish. Get in touch if you want some great tips on how to plan your road trip best.

Lisbon

We've secured your first nights of accommodation when you arrive in Lisbon. You'll stay at Selina Hostel in the center of the city, and what better place to kick off your Portugal adventure!

Note that the city is all about walking or taking the tram. This of course gives you some great excercise (who doesn't need that?) and obviously some spectacular sights, once you reach the top of the hills. Lisbon is very beautiful and boasts an impressive food scene as well.

Peniche

From Lisbon you'll find your way to the cozy beach town, Peniche. A town that attracts surfers and epicures. Chill by the seaside, check out the narrow side streets or test yourself on a surf board. Not only is this town extremely picturesque it also comes with the most relaxed beach vibe. A few things you might wanna check out would be the small walled city Óbidos, the island Baleal or the rocky area Praia da Consolacao.

The Monastary Heritage Route

From Peniche to Coimbra you'll find the epic old Monastary Heritage Route. Along this route you'll get a chance to pay a visit to the 3 UNESCO protected towns Alcobaca, Batalha and Tamor. Make sure you have time to check out the old monstaries that these cities are famous for. A stroll in the town center is also obligatory once you've parked your camper. You could consider to find a camp site somewhere in between Peniche and Coimbra to make sure you have enough time to explore all three towns.

Coimbra

It's time for some more urban settlements as you arrive in beautiful Coimbra located by the Mondego River. It's also here you'll find Portugal's oldest university which with it's student population gives the city a youthful vibe. Aside from being quite a student hub, Coimbra is also full of cultural sights and beautiful architechture if that's your thing. Enjoy a few days in this truly buzzing city.

Porto

Last stop on this suggested road trip is Porto, which is home the delicious port wine (don't drink and drive!). The city is divided by the Duoro River, and there's plenty of cozy spots along the banks of the river where you enjoy your morning coffee or the afternoon drink. The city boasts an impressive art scene and if you want to practice your dance moves there's a hefty nightlife here as well. Drop off your camper in Porto or save your one way fee and drive it back to Lisbon after a few days.'
