Trips designed for your career break

These career break routes are built for you who have more than just a couple of weeks and want to use that time well. You’ll move through different regions and cultures, mix active stretches with slower stops, and have space to grow into the journey rather than rush it. Some parts will challenge you physically, others mentally, and plenty of days are simply about being somewhere new and letting it sink in.

Every itinerary on this page is a suggestion, not a fixed plan. You can adjust the pace, swap destinations, upgrade comfort levels or add experiences that matter more to you. A career break is personal, and your route should reflect that. The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s trip, but to shape one that fits your time frame, budget and what you want this chapter to give you.

After the trek, Pokhara gives you space to recover, relax by the lake and enjoy a slower pace before flying on.

Southeast Asia shifts the focus to culture, history and everyday life. Bangkok eases you back into city energy, followed by Cambodia’s highlights through Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Battambang. You then slow things right down on Koh Rong, before continuing through southern and central Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh, Mui Ne, Cat Tien National Park, Da Lat, Hoi An, Hue, Ninh Binh and Pu Luong give you a steady rhythm of cities, countryside and quieter local areas.

Northern Vietnam wraps things up with Hanoi and a cruise through Ha Long Bay, before a big contrast in Japan. You land in Tokyo and move through Fuji Five Lakes, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagano and Hakone, before ending back in Tokyo. It’s a long, varied journey that fits a career break perfectly: physical challenges, new skills, different cultures, and enough time in each place to feel present rather than rushed.

Mexico City - Oaxaca - Puerto Escondido - Palenque - San Cristobal - Campeche - Merida - Valladolid - Isla Holbox - Tulum - Bacalar - Caye Caulker - Flores - Semuc Champey - Lake Atitlan - Antigua

Mexico, Belize & Guatemala

This route takes you through southern Mexico and into Guatemala at a steady pace, giving you time to experience both culture and nature properly. You begin in Mexico City and Oaxaca, where food, markets and everyday street life set the tone. Then the coast calls in Puerto Escondido, with beach time and slower days before heading inland to Palenque and San Cristóbal, where jungle ruins and highland towns add depth and contrast.

As you move through Campeche, Mérida and Valladolid, you get a mix of colonial cities, cenotes and access to ancient Maya sites, without feeling like you’re stuck in one type of scenery. Isla Holbox, Tulum and Bacalar bring Caribbean water and time to reset, while still keeping things interesting with lagoons, ruins and small-town life. Crossing into Belize, Caye Caulker adds reef life and laid-back island days before the journey continues into Guatemala.

Flores and Semuc Champey shift the focus back to rainforest and limestone pools, followed by time around Lake Atitlán where volcano views frame daily life in lakeside villages. You finish in Antigua, a compact city surrounded by mountains, with space to reflect on how much ground you’ve covered. Career Breakers Philippines Thailand
Route
Manila - Donsol - Bacacay - Dumaguette/Dauin - Siquijor - Moalboal - Cebu City - Chiang Mai - Umphang National Park - Bangkok - Khao Sok - Krabi - Bangkok

Philippines & Thailand

You start in the Philippines, easing into the trip in Manila before heading to Donsol for time on the water, including a whale shark experience and quieter moments like a firefly river tour at night. In Bacacay, the landscape changes with views of Mayon Volcano and an ATV ride that gets you right into the terrain. Further south around Dumaguete and Dauin, you go below the surface with diving, building skills and spending real time in the ocean.

Island life continues in Siquijor and Moalboal, where you balance beach days with waterfalls and coastal adventures, before wrapping up the Philippines section in Cebu City. Then you shift to Northern Thailand, where Chiang Mai brings cycling through the countryside and a hands-on cooking class that connects you to local food in a practical way. Moving towards Mae Sot and Umphang National Park, the focus turns more remote, with jungle scenery and fewer travellers around.

Bangkok adds big-city contrast before heading south to Khao Sok’s rainforest landscapes and Krabi’s coastline. By the time you loop back to Bangkok, you’ve mixed marine life, jungle, volcanoes, food culture and city stops into one extended journey. It’s active in parts, relaxed in others, and long enough for you to settle into the rhythm of travelling, escaping your daily life.

Kenya to South Africa

This overland Africa journey is exactly the kind of trip you choose when you’ve got a serious amount of time and you want to dive into Africa beyond just a handful of big safari parks. For roughly eight weeks across southern and eastern Africa, you travel from Cape Town all the way up to Nairobi by overland vehicle, mostly camping and spending nights under the stars. You cross multiple countries — from deserts and rivers to savannah and rainforest — with long drive days that aren’t just transport but part of the experience, meeting landscapes and people along the way.

What makes this different from a short safari loop is the variety and scale. You follow rough roads through Namibia’s deserts and Etosha’s watering holes, paddle traditional canoes into the Okavango Delta, watch wildlife in places like South Luangwa and the Serengeti, and spend time at Victoria Falls with options for activities if you want them. You also cross into East Africa for gorilla trekking in Uganda’s rainforest, which takes you deep into nature on foot with experts guiding each step.

It’s camping most nights with a few simple hotels or hostels mixed in, and the trip isn’t gentle - it’s long, sometimes bumpy and can be demanding - but it’s exactly that pace that makes it stand out as something you'll remember forever. You get to see a huge chunk of the African continent, while exploring the beautiful landscapes, wildlife and culture this continent has to offer.

  • Recommended duration: Around 2 months
  • Price range: £7500-£8500 p.p. Included in this price range are flights, accommodation, entrance fees to national parks and reserves, bush camping and safari in the Okavango Delta, gorilla trek in Uganda, several activities and safaris, and a lot of meals.
  • Best time to travel: between June and April
Career Breakers South America
Route
Bogota - San Gil -Salento - Medellin - Cartagena - Barranquila - Minca - Santa Marta - Quito - Galapagos - Quito - Buenos Aires - El Calafate - El Chalten - Torres del Paine - Bariloche - Mendoza - Salta - Iguasu Falls - Rio de Janeiro - Paraty - Ilha Grande - Fortaleza

South America

Four months in South America gives you proper time on the continent, but it’s still a journey with a lot of ground to cover. You move through Colombia’s mix of mountain towns, creative cities and Caribbean coastline, where you can balance active days with beach time and long bus rides that become part of the story. There’s room for hiking, coffee regions, diving into local food scenes and getting used to travelling at your own pace.

In Ecuador, the Galapagos stands out as a true highlight, with wildlife experiences that feel very different from anything on the mainland. Then the route stretches south into Argentina and Chile, where Patagonia brings big distances, glacier hikes and national parks like Torres del Paine. You combine that with city life in Buenos Aires, wine regions, desert landscapes in the north and the power of Iguazu Falls, seeing how varied one continent can really be.

Brazil adds both urban stops and long stretches of coastline, including Rio de Janeiro and smaller beach towns where you can recharge before moving on again. Over four months, you’ll experience different climates, travel styles and budgets. It’s not slow travel all the way through, and it’s not constant action either. It’s a balanced, extended journey that gives you time to adapt, grow more confident on the road, and settle into life beyond your usual routine.

  • Recommended duration: 3-4 months
  • Price range: £4500-£5500 p.p. Included in this price range are flights, accommodation in hostels and some activities.
  • Best time to travel: between November and April
