In love with Australia

Hi, I'm Sofia. My adventure in Australia started in 2016 when I decided to go as an au-pair. I fell totally 'head over heels' in love with the country. I went home a year later and worked for a couple of years before I decided to study overseas. I met my boyfriend when I lived in Sydney so I decided that it would be interesting to do a year of studies overseas. And here I am.... at University of Technology in Sydney.

How KILROY helped me

After chatting with Linnea from KILROY we ended up finding my dream education and instead of doing a semester abroad it ended up becoming an entire degree. Linnea helped me find the universities that were offering my degree, that’s when she told me about University of Technology Sydney (UTS) I did not really know about UTS beforehand, but after looking at more information, like location, rank etc I felt like it was a perfect fit. My agent from KILROY also helped me figuring out how to finance the degree, she found me a scholarship that the UTS offered, she also helped me with funding and student aid. Linnea always answered any questions I might have. I ended up getting the scholarship, I pay for my tuition fee through savings, funding and the scholarship. Something to think about is that it is very expensive living in Sydney, but there are ways around it to make it cheaper. Like living out of the expensive areas which I chose to do.

My Bachelor's Degree in Sydney

So my dream degree ended up being a Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting and Human Resources Management. I have only finished my first year of my three-year degree. But I do believe I have already learned so much and my English has improved and developed a lot. Family members and friends are telling me daily how much my vocabulary has increased as well as I am now speaking with a better flow and more accurate grammar. I’m so incredibly curious to see how my English will turn out at the end. I started my degree in the middle of the academic year. So, I ended up doing one semester in face-to-face education and the last semester online.

I study 3 days a week

A normal day at UTS starts with a lecture following a tutorial or the other way around. It all depends on your schedule. You can have all between 3 days to 4 days at campus, which means you are either there for 3 to 6 hours, as a lecture/tutorial is one and a half hours long. My first semester I had uni for three days a week. Me and my friends always ended up going out for lunch after classes at different locations around UTS, my favourite spot is Darling Harbour.

Something that is really good to know is that students in Sydney are more focused on their studies. I found it a bit surprising how the student life isn’t as social here as it is back home.

My favorite places in Australia

A typical day for me when I’m not working or studying, is exploring different places around my area as well as in inner Sydney. As I have already lived here for more than six months this has led me to explore other places than just the ones I initially fell in love with.
One of the my favorite places in New South Wales is Jervis Bay, around 3 hours car drive from Sydney. It is most famous for Hyams Beach which has the most white sand in the world. I encourage anyone who is visiting Australia to visit Jervis Bay. I also encourage everyone to at least celebrate one New Year in Sydney as it is an amazing experience.
A trip that I’m looking forward to is the Great Ocean Road followed by the West Coast, as I have only traveled around the East Coast of Australia. This was incredible and the best part of the trip for me was Fraser Island, which is the largest sand island in the world. I also was lucky enough to try skydiving which was amazing to do over the Great Barrier Reef.

One phone call away...

The best thing about studying in Australia is the great memories you will make as well as the amazing culture combined with the environment you are constantly around. I’m so happy for the support I received from KILROY as they are always only one email/phone call away. They have always helped and have guided me in how to fix any issues I have faced. As well as answering any questions I might have had. The worst thing for me with studying in Sydney is the homesickness, some days are worse than others but for me it has been tricky to deal with. I’m very close to my family and I love them so much but it is still one of the best decisions I have ever made.
