The decision process

When I turned 18 in the Netherlands, I went to school for two years and worked for a big steel company.  After those two years, I decided I did not want to do this the rest of my career. I always wanted to go on vacation to America… but, I thought, why only go on vacation, when I could also get my degree there?  With some help, I found a way that enabled me to leave my job and study in America.

After sending my information to KILROY, they helped me decide where to go for these specific programs.  A friend went to Florida, and they said that it was a really nice and a relaxed place to live.  After being here for almost a half of a year, I totally agree!

I started my degree for computer programming and analysis.  Soon after my first semester, I decided to change my program to cyber security.  Living as a student in America is fun, but can be a bit of work at the same time.  It did not take long to get used to life as a student in the United States, because most Americans are friendly and always willing to help out.

My student accommodation in Florida

Hawks Landing, HCC’s student housing, is a great community to live in and only a 5-minute walk to school.  HCC is just 10 minutes away from a beach.  If you feel like going to a bigger beach, you can go to Clearwater – which is a little farther away – but when I am there, it feels like I am in Miami.  There are lots of things to do throughout the year, and HCC is always planning fun student activities.

Student activities

As for student life, HCC has lots of activities.  There is always something going on at the college, and the international office organizes fun things to do year-round.  They have taken us to the beach, a local trampoline park, boat rides downtown, and much more.  I am very much involved at the college.  This semester, I attended a Florida International Leadership Conference (FILC).  I learned so much and met people from all over the world.
