My name is Ida and I am studying nursing in Australia

Ida and friends in blue water while studying in Australia

"Hi, my name is Ida and I’m 20 years old."

"My last year in high school I decided I wanted to study somewhere else. So I contacted KILROY and had a chat with them as soon as I could and I received a lot of help. They helped me applying for my Bachelor of Business at Queensland University of Technology.

From Business to Nursing

"Without any problems, I got to Australia 6 months later, and I loved it. I lived in a student accommodation and got to know a lot of people my first few days in Australia. Even though I went by myself, I met so many people straight away so I didn’t really have time to miss anyone or anything at home, especially not the weather.

I started uni after 1 week in Australia (still jet-lagged), and I was a bit disappointed that it was so hard to meet people in classes (as we were almost 1,000 people during the lecture no one really talked to each other). We also had tutorials, which is smaller classes with more discussion about the lecture content. It is also easier to meet people in tutorials as you get closer to each other and see them every week. After the first semester at QUT doing Business, I decided to change to Bachelor of Nursing, and so far, I love it."

Surfing after classes

"At QUT I joined a club called QUT Surfers, which I do not regret at all. I’ve got to known a group of people that are now my family in Australia. It takes around a hour with train to the beach, but we also have a fake beach in the middle of the city if you don’t have time to go to the coast. Personally, I almost go to the coast every week and practice my surfing.

I am so happy I decided to do my whole degree here, and it has, so far, been the best experience of my life. I hope others are getting inspired to do the same as me, because it really is worth it!"

How KILROY helped me

"KILROY, first of all, helped me choose my destination. I told them I wanted to go somewhere warm, with a beach close by but also a city-like place. Since I wanted to do a Bachelor in Business, they told me about QUT in Brisbane.  They then helped me with the application process and communication with the university.

The best thing about studying abroad is all the people you meet. You get friends from all over the world and get memories for life. Also, the opportunity to travel while studying, you get the chance to see another part of the world and experience different cultures."

My advice for future students

"If you are in doubt about going abroad: just do it! And enjoy the time, because it flies by faster than you’ll expect! Also, if you choose to go to Brisbane, it actually gets cold sometimes, bring long pants and hoodies."
