San Diego is the most amazing city in California near the Mexican border. The city is known as America's Finest City because of its beauty and because it’s one of the safest cities in America. This page tells you about all the activities you can do when you are not studying or attending classes at the university.

Student life in San Diego

San Diego city has about 1.3 million inhabitants. With 70,000 students you definitely feel the young vibe here. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and you will not be bored!

In San Diego the sun is almost always shining. Out of 365 days, 300 are without rain per year. The weather is warm and you will find numerous beaches. Anyone can benefit from opportunities for surfing, shopping along the promenade and visiting the many theme parks. In both San Diego and La Jolla you have a large selection of restaurants, cafés and other venues. 

Many happenings in San Diego actually are outside central area. You will find great shopping spots, venues and bars and meet many nice relaxed people outside the centre. Especially the districts Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach are good places to hang out, almost regardless of what you enjoy doing.

Places to stay in San Diego

Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are popular neighbourhoods among international students in San Diego. If you're going to study one or two semester in San Diego and prefer to live off-campus, this is a great place to stay. In addition to a 4 km long beach, it has a bay for water sports and many cafés, restaurants and shops.

California ... knows how to party

Do you like going out to a bar, event, festival, show, restaurant or a nightclub? San Diego is known for its great parties and nightlife. One of the best places to go is Gaslamp Quarter and plenty of parties are organized by students on campus. Please keep in mind that alcohol is not allowed under 21 years.

5 free activities in San Diego for students 

  1. Watch wild sea lions soaking up the sun on the rocks at La Jolla Cove.
  2. Watch the beautiful sunset at Oceanside Pier, San Diego during a campfire.
  3. Go to Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre urban cultural park in San Diego. The botanical garde is free of charge, and sometimes live bands are playing here in the evening.
  4. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown San Diego. Free admission daily for anyone 25 and under (with ID). 
  5. BEACHES! So many beaches in San Diego, just locate your favourite one and bring the studies, parties, friends down there.

Climate in San Diego 

The San Diego region has a Mediterranean climate, offering mild, sunny weather throughout the year. The monthly average temperature is 14 °C in January and 22 °C in August. The hottest period of the year is usually late summer/early fall when it can reach above 30 °C. Snow and ice are rare in the wintertime.
