Dumaguete is a highly urbanized city on the island of Negros Oriental in the Philippines. It is often referred to as a university town because of the four universities and a number of colleges. Actually, the first American university in Asia is here! So expect a lot of students and a vibrant student life. Furthermore, the city attracts a lot of travelers due to the islands many attractions plus the easy access to Cebu island. There is a good reason why the city’s nickname is “City of gentle people”; the population is super friendly and it is a city well suited for relaxation and ‘chillaxing’.

Attractions in Dumaguete

Go for a walk down Rizal Boulevard. The boulevard at the waterfront is the perfect place to experience the Dumaguete lifestyle. You can watch the locals enjoy their time together and get lunch from one of the many restaurants here. Head to the famous Siliman University at the north end of the boulevard. The campus is an attraction in itself with the colonial style architecture but you should also visit the Siliman library and Anthropology Museum.

Diving in Dumaguete

Just 15 km south of Dumaguete in the town of Dauin, is where you will find the best diving spots. There are lots of dive shops in Dauin that will pick you up at your hotel in the morning and drop you off after a day of funfilled scuba diving. Alternatively, you can also go to one of the beautiful, picturesque islands of Sumilon, Apo and Siquijor.

Getting to Dumaguete

You can fly to Dumaguete from Manila or you can take the more time consuming, but perhaps more fun, ferryboat trips from Cebu City, Manila or Dapitan.
