Washington, DC - The Presidential City

Washington, D.C. is a lot more than just the White House and other historical monuments. The Nation's capital is also home to some of the best museums in the United States. From natural history, to science and space exploration, to newsmedia, to American history, there is something to satisfy every interest. Best of all, most museums are free, which is good news for travelers on a budget.

Historical winds

Washington, D.C., also known as "The District", impresses visitors with its many national monuments. Two of these "must-see" landmarks are the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. At the Lincoln Memorial, you will see a giant statue of the late president Abraham Lincoln looking down from his chair behind 35 pillars of marble. Next to the statue is an inscription of the Emancipation Proclomation, which Lincoln used to free the slaves during the civil war era. This site has been featured in many movies and teleivision shows, such as House of Cards, Forrest Gump, and Wedding Crashers. Another important monument is the very tall Washington monument, located in close proximity to the White House. The pointed monument, dedicated to the first president of the United States, George Washington, is surrounded by a great number of American flags. The site offers very good photo opportunities in various directions. Also, be sure not to miss the splendid walk from the Lincoln Monument and all the way down the Mall to Capitol Hill. Here, you will feel the very center of world power, according to many observers. These national monuments are simply inspring, no matter which country you come from!

Warfare and presidents

Despite the short history of the country, America has fought many wars all over the world. Therefore, Washington is the home of all major monuments dedicated to various international clashes and fallen soldiers. The most famous of them is the Vietnam War Memorial, where all 58,000 names of America's fallen soldiers are inscribed on a black walll. Today, family members go there to show respect, lay flowers, and etch a copy of their loved one's name with a pencil and paper. Another great site for visitors is the Arlington National Cemetery, located close to the Pentagon on the bank of the Potomac River. President John F. Kennedy rests here with an eternal flame, along with thousands of other soldiers killed in action throughout history. It’s still quite common today to witness a funeral at Arlington Cemetery, since many U.S. soldiers are killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Politics and Obama

Of course, Washington is the very center of American politics and history. If you have a profound interest in this subject, then you have come to the right place. The district is a stimulating paradise for anyone who is passionate about domestic and global politics. Of course, President Barack Obama resides here, adding to the excitement and frenzy in the air. It is unliklely that you will see the president, due to high security and his busy schedule. However, you might get lucky! In any case, the White House is certainly worth a visit.

Central location

Washington is just a few hours south of New York City by train, making for a convenient transition between destinations. Washington is also close to Baltimore, where one can find good train, flight, and bus connections to any other area in the country. Accommodation is generally fair with cheap hostels downtown and medium-priced hotels just outside downtown. There’s a lot of money to be saved by not traveling to Washington during peak tourist season (summer) and political sessions. If you are visiting in a car during the warmer periods, try a campsite on the outskirts of the city (20-30 km away) and spend only about 10 dollars for a campsite. If you do not have a car, public transportation is good and you can easily get around on foot in most areas. If you enjoy outdoor adventures and nature, you should hit the road and follow the Potomac river inland. Before you journey through the rest of the country, why not begin your adventure in the nation's capital?
