Carleton University offers a dynamic, student-centered academic experience. It is a comprehensive campus-based university on a beautiful 62 hectares just a few minutes from downtown. Approximately 10% of the 26,000 students come from 153 countries worldwide. Carleton students gain hands-on experiences through co-operative education programs, work placements, and field trips and internships.

As the seat of the federal government, Ottawa is home to some of Canada's most influential government and nongovernmental organizations. It also boasts a vibrant business sector, numerous museums and embassies and one of Canada's largest concentrations of clinical, medical and life sciences research facilities. Over the years, the university has forged strong links with these industry and government partners resulting in valuable research and work placements for our students and graduates.

Study and work in Canada

International students are able to work on campus, or apply for an off-campus work permit after 6 months of full-time academic studies. During the academic year, students are permitted to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week and are allowed to work full-time during holidays (winter break, March break, summer).

Co-operative education: Selected program areas provide co-operative education options that combine academic studies with paid work experience. Students alternate between terms of full-time study and full-time employment.

Work after graduation (post-completion): Students completing a minimum two-year program of study may apply for a work permit to remain in Canada to work for up to three years following graduation to gain work experience.

Student life at Carleton University

Carleton’s campus is lively, diverse and caring. Students come from all over Canada and over 150 different countries. There is a strong sense of community among faculty, students and staff and you will find a welcoming environment in which you will quickly feel at home. Bordered by the Rideau river and the UNESCO designated Rideau Canal, Carleton's beautiful campus is easy to navigate.

The Library and academic buildings are clustered together around a large outdoor green space.  Carleton's residences sit at the foot of the academic buildings, close to their first-class athletics facilities.  The University Centre, the hub of campus life, buzzes with activity.  Several coffee shops, the bookstore, a food court, and a variety of offices serving students' needs are spread over several floors.  The flags of dozens of countries hang from the ceiling of the interior atrium reflecting the university's connection to the world and commitment to ensuring that those from other nations always feel welcome.

In september, Carleton's Fall Orientation, a six-day extravaganza of social and academic events, is held to introduce you to Carleton and your classmates before classes begin. Orientation ends with a New Student Convocation where first-year students will be honoured in a ceremony to officially mark the beginning of their academic journey at Carleton.
