Landmark of Florence - the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
Florence's cultural treasures are located close to each other in the Old Town and are best experienced on foot. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the city's cultural highlights and a good starting point for sightseeing in Florence. Without a visit here your trip to Florence is incomplete. Take a look inside the cathedral to find out how impressive the large dome is, created by the famous Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi. If you are not afraid of heights and dare to walk up the stairs, you can to get access to the cathedral ceiling and top of the dome, for a small fee. You will be rewarded with the finest 360-degree views of Florence, the Arno river and the surrounding mountains.
If you continue down from the cathedral down to the Old Town Square, you will find Michelangelo's famous statue of David. From there you can easily walk to Ponte Vecchio, who is known for the many shops and houses that are built as part of the bridge, in typical Medieval architectural style. However, although a trip to Florence almost demands a stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, be warned it is a tourist trap during the high season.
World class art
Behind the Old Town Square and down to the river is the famous Galleria degli Uffizi Museum. It is regarded by many as a world class museum and has special works that include Botticelli's famous painting "The Birth of Venus" and "Spring". The museum is a popular tourist attraction, but it can only accommodate 600 visitors at a time, so we recommend booking a time for your visit through the museum's website. But do not let that scare you - this museum is definitely a must on your trip to Florence.
Shopping with a large S
If you need a break from history, art and culture, shopping is the solution. Most shops are located around the area between the Cathedral and the river. Via Tornabuoni is the most exclusive street where the big brands have their stores. It is also the end of this street, down the river, you will find the famous Italian shoe store; Salvatore Ferragamo. It is located in a medieval palace - Palazzo Spini Feroni - and looking at shoes in a real Italian palace is a genuine experience in itself. The basement is transformed into a museum, through historical photographs and exhibits that contains many of Ferragamo shoes, tells the story of his footwear from 1930 and onwards. This is definitely a good option among Florence rich variety of museums.
