Spain has been a favorite tourist destination among Europeans for a very long time. The biggest reason for this is Spain's wonderful climate with mild winters and hot summers. If you are into culture, or big city vibes, you will not be disappointed by taking a trip to Madrid or Barcelona. Do not forget the charm and cultural opportunities in beautiful cities like Sevilla, Bilbao and Valencia. In Andalusia in southern Spain, one should not miss the beautiful and historic city, Ronda. Spain and its people
The population of Spain is around 46 million people. Madrid is the capital and has a population of almost three million people. Barcelona is at the second largest, with close to 1,5 million people. The majority of the Spanish people are Catholics, while protestant Christians and Muslims are minority religions. Spanish is the official language but some regions have other languages, such as Catalan and Basque. No matter what part of Spain you travel to, you can be sure of one thing: here people are used to living their lives to the fullest.
The Spanish cuisine
If you want to eat really delicious food during your vacation, this is the right country to visit! Fresh ingredients and tasty dishes will give even the daintiest person a culinary experience out of the ordinary. The proximity to both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean (depending on where you are located) means that many dishes will include seafood and fish delicacies.
The Spanish national dish is tapas. In the last years Tapas have spread to other parts of the world as a trendy and enjoyable way to eat and socialise with friends. Tapas are served in small portions, and you will order in around six or seven different Tapas dishes for a meal. Everyone shares the Tapas, and the conversation will often be around the food you are eating.
Spanish cuisine is very tasty and not so spicy. The Spanish have a big interest for food, and will spend hours enjoying their meals together. Usually the dinner does not start until around 10 pm and the food is an important part of the Spanish way of socialising.
An Ocean of opportunities
Depending on where in Spain you want to go and how long you want to stay, there are un-numerous choices. If you only have a couple of days to spend or a long weekend, go for one of the big cities. If you have more time a good idea is to rent a car and drive between the wineries in the Rioja region. You could also hike in the national park Doñana which is on the UNESCO list of World Heritages. There is also a possibility to go island-hopping between the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera). Two KILROY favourites are Formentera and Ibiza. Ibiza is the crazy party island with world class clubs while Formentera is its calm and restful little sister.
The beaches in Formentera are fabulously white and among the best around the Mediterranean. The island is very laid-back which will give you a feeling of the authentic Spain. Since the island is flat and not very big it is easy to explore it by bike, or even better: by motorcycle.
Ibiza - Partying and awesome beaches
Ibiza is famous for its wild parties where the world's best and biggest DJs play. It is not unusual to see celebrities party here. But Ibiza is a lot more than "just" a party island. In the North part of the island is a fantastic coastline with a very harsh and dramatic scenery. Here you can find empty beaches you will have entirely to yourself, even during the busy summer months.
Traveling around Spain
It is recommended to travel with local transport, such as trains and buses. You can go about anywhere on the mainland and if you want to visit the islands get a ferry or go by plane. KILROY also recommends you to rent a car and drive around on your own. You will be surprised by how easy it is and how much you will experience and see. Of course we help you book low-price plane tickets between mainland and the islands.
