Lazy Days on River Kwai - 5 Days (HJ504)

Day 1: Bangkok via Kanchanaburi to Hintok River Camp.

See the River Kwai, museums and the Hellfire Pass during the day

Tour departs from the meeting point* in Bangkok around 06:00-06:30 am. As this is a joint transfer the minibus/coach will pick up from different meeting points in Bangkok and start the transfer towards Kanchanaburi.
130 kilometer west of Bangkok, not far from the Burmese (Myanmar) border, you will find the bridge over the River Kwai, made (in)famous by the 1957 Academy Award-winning film of the same name. Grim history aside, this area of Thailand is rich in culture and natural beauty. The border area with Burma/Myanmar is known for its mountainous charm that is unmatched elsewhere in the country.

Upon reaching Kanchahaburi city around 09:00 you will get to see some of the highlights up close. Visit Thailand–Burma Railway Centre, an interactive museum, information and research facility dedicated that presents the history of the Thailand–Burma Railway. The center offers the visitor an educational and moving experience. You will walk on the famous bridge across the River Kwai and see the Allied War Cemetery.

Around noon you will arrive at Hintok River Camp, which is located approx. 90 km from Kanchanaburi, near Saiyok National park. Situated next the Kwai Noi river, there you will experience the nature and silence that the national parks in Thailand offers. After check in, lunch will be served at the camp. In the afternoon around 14:00, you will go to see the Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum which is dedicated to Allied Prisoners of War and Asian laborers who suffered and died at Hellfire Pass and elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region during WW2. Trek along the Hellfire Pass Walking Trails and return to Hintok River Camp.

Late afternoon is on your desirable! Get on a mountain bike (free of charege) to visit a village or farm near by the camp or swim in the amazing natural pool. It has been a very informative day, where you have gotten an insight into why Kanchanaburi has its place in the history books. Round it up with a dinner at 19:00 in the camp restaurant.

Early rising. Go for a bike ride at 6:00AM across a hanging bridge, to a local temple. You will experience a Buddhist tradition that god back in time. At dawn, monks will walk the quiet streets in cities all over Thailand. Locals will go to the monks and offer food that they have prepared early in the morning. When the monk accepts the food, he is blessing the person that offered the food. This is a peek into a beautiful and ancient tradition. According to their tradition, monks are not allowed to buy food, and therefor they rely on locals to offer them food. Food that is not eaten by the monks is handed out to struggling kids that hang around the temples for a place to stay and receive food. Return to Hintok River Camp at 7:00, where breakfast will be served.
