Dreaming of exploring the unconventional?

We hear you. The same goes for us. We love exploring areas that see less tourists and more awesomeness. Nothing beats the feeling of finding this one spot, that you have more or less for yourself. Of course, you're never guaranteed that you're the only one around, but we can definetely guarantee you that these places are freakin' cool! So, here you'll get 6 spots in South Africa that you need to add to your travel plans right now.

Dolphin Coast

Around 40 km north from Durban you'll find Dolphin Coast, which, obviously, is famous for it's big contentration of dolphins. If your on a road trip along the coastline, this should definitely be a stop on the way. Enjoy the cozy beach town of Ballito, and make sure you have time to go for a stroll on the beach. We recommend Thompsons Bay Beach in particular.

Valley of Desolation

250 km north of Port Elizabeth, in the middle of Camdeboo National Park, you'll find this natural wonder. The best way to explore the majestic view points from Valley of Desolation is to get up early and experience the sun rise in the horizon from the top of the more than 120 meter high vertical cliffs that arises from the ground as a result of more than 100 million years of volcanic and erosive forces. Maybe, if you're lucky, you get a chance to spot the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra.

If you feel adventurous, you can choose to go for a hike in the National Park.

Tsitsikamma National Park

From one amazing national park to another. Tsitsikamma National Park is found along the Garden Route if you're doing a road trip here (and we recommend you do!). The famous Storms River Suspension Bridge is also found in this area, if you happen to be into bungy jumping. If not, you can also do ziplining, canoeing and lots of other adventure activities here!

Die Hel

Die Hel, or The Hell, if translated is an unspoilt valley that's situated in the Swartberg Pass in the southern part of the country. It's located within the Swartberg Nature Reserve which by the way happens to be a UNESCO world heritage site. This place is not easy to get to, but once you're here, you're in for a treat. The place is also referred to as Gamkaskloof, but The Hell sounds so much cooler.

Blyde River Canyon

This place is recognized as the world's largest green canyon. There are some absolutely amazing view points to discover in this area. This canyon is forming the northern part of the Drakensberg Mountains and has an average depth of impressive 750 meters. It's the second largest canyon in Africa, and if you're in the area, we recommend that you don't miss it!

Buffalo Bay Beach

In one of the most southern parts of South Africa, situated around 5 km south of the Garden Route itself, you'll find the stunning beach of Buffalo Bay. This is a great place to relax and get your batteries recharged if you need to. If you're into surfing, the Buffalo Bay Beach has great conditions!
